I never used the term "mental problems." That is a much broader term than "mental disorders" which are much worse and have official psychological diagnoses.
It is my understanding from the research that there is no proven cure for Cluster B personality disorders. There is good evidence from Controlled Randomized Trials that milder medical conditions can be treated by Cognitive Bias Therapy (CBT).
My assumption that mental disorders are largely genetic is not supported by the majority of profession. There is a huge amount of evidence that most individual characteristics and life outcomes are 40-60% heritable.
I bet that as more studies are done, the same conclusion will be found for mental disorders.
Currently the vast majority of psychologists focus on the environment or events that lead to mental disorders. There is currently a strong bias against believing in genetic causes in the profession. As more genetic evidence comes out, however, I believe that will change. There is growing evidence that personality in general is heritable, but not much of the research focuses on the genetic causes of mental disorders.
The following is a response to a comment from “HBI” that he later deleted.
Strangely, HBI blocked me because I responded to his comment. Very odd behavior…
I never claimed that Ted Kaczynski's manifesto is evidence of him being "insane." (I never used the word). I am not sure why you believe that you can diagnose someone from a political manifesto.
Ted Kaczynski was officially diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. You can dispute that diagnosis if you want, but I think his life story fits with the diagnosis.
The fact that a man with this diagnosis can write a manifesto that is not so different from other radical political manifestos just gives more evidence for my argument.
Ted Kaczynski was far beyond "fairly bright."
Reread the section in the article about his life story. It takes far more intelligence than that to graduate from high school at age 15 and be a National Merit finalist. Kaczynski was accepted into the Harvard mathematics program at age 16. At age 25, Kaczynski became the youngest assistant professor in the history of UC Berkeley.
I am not "taring everyone I don't agree with with the label insane."
I never said anything about "people who use directed violence to accomplish goals."
Interesting - a little disturbing but it's always important to read pieces that leave you a little uncomfortable. John Nash jr comes to mind.
Why do you say that the mental problems of most or all ideologues are incurable and genetic?

Many younger people also outgrow their conditions without treatment.
There is no clinical evidence for the effectiveness for most psychotherapy.
