This is really good too!

What do you think of the idea of Startup cities that's taking root in the libertarian community? Are there any lessons they can take from the autonomous cities from medieval Europe?

Thanks for the question. I think Startup cities are a very interesting idea. Founding new cities with no existing regulations or bureaucracy is an intriguing idea.

My biggest concern is geography. You cannot place a city in a random location and hope for it to grow.

Cities can only function if they are in certain geographies. In today's world that typically means on or near an ocean port. That will give a start-up city the ability to grow into thriving commercial cities like Singapore or Hong Kong.

Unfortunately, all of those locations are already taken (as far as I know). That will make it really difficult for supporters of Startup cities to find a good location.

While not a Startup city, I did write an article on a proposal that has some similarities:

I was more thinking about using it in Africa. Most African countries are sparsely populated and still very underdeveloped. It's good to have some right wing people in developmental economics for once.

Yes, Africa seems like a logical place for the reasons you mentioned, but there are very few good locations for ocean ports. This is one of the reasons why Africa is underdeveloped in the first place.

As for "right wing", if you are implying that you consider me right-wing, I do not consider myself that way. I am anti-Leftists, but I do not think the Right has viable solutions.

I am happy to discuss progress with all ideologies, though. There are no ideological litmus tests in this column.

Well you are effectively right wing these days, whether you consider yourself such or not.

LOL

I am 100% sure that Leftists think that I am "right wing," but then they call everyone who disagrees with them on a single issue that.

I didn't mean to imply that you're right wing. I'm just saying that I'm and other people who are pursuing the idea of Startup cities are considered right wing.

Sure.

Do you have any thoughts on the subject, particularly regarding geography?

The biggest thing how you would convince often extractive government officials from letting you run your own city. What is like the mininal viable product for a new city etc.? Where would you go to acquire funding and expertise for a project like this?
