Very interesting analysis and set of results - not exactly surprising that most rankings remained the same relative to each other, with a few exceptions but presumably any major outliers would have been in the news and understood to have earned their change in ranking.

I guess headlines about any given country maintaining "steady progress" would not be too compelling, while this overall macro view does make a commanding headline.

Are there other "competing" indices? Do they/ will they show a similar situation?

Have you/ are you developing your own alternative index?

Thanks for the comment. No, I do not develop my own index. I prefer to use a wide variety of metrics that are already available. In general, they show the same overall trajectory, which I think is good evidence for the utility of the concept of "progress."
